Review: ‘Steven Universe’: Beach City Drift: Initial S

Steven and Connie battle their biggest foe in a car race

Connie returns for the first time in a while. Together she and Steven fuse once again and become Stevonnie so they can enter a race again Kevin, the creepy guy who hit on them the last time they fused. Not exactly the best use of magical powers but still at least Connie is back.

The theme of this episode is a really poignant one about not letting the negative people in life get the better of you. Often people obsess over those who have made them feel awkward or caused them grief. In an effort to take revenge against them, a person will often travel down a road they don’t want just to prove them wrong or humiliate them in some way. This is a unnecessary use of one’s time and energy which could be used to do something you enjoy.

The episode is also a great homage to Initial D, an anime series about drift racing. The talk by Ronaldo about the hidden power of the car is similar to how many characters in Initial D talk about the hidden power of the main character’s car. It really is a pretty great series with a great soundtrack to it.

Okay Steven Universe, let’s talk. Yes there have been a lot of great and emotional character episode since this marathon started but enough is enough. A little action, some battle, or at least a bit more adventure would be nice in the upcoming week. It’s not so hard to ask for a fight against a giant monster ever once in awhile is it?
