Should You See The New Sci-Fi Film ‘Arrival’? Here’s 4 Reasons Why!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘Arrival’ Delivers On Every Level. It Almost Makes Up For The Rest Of 2016’s Films.

It’s tough to know what to expect from Denis Villeneuve’sArrival‘. With the influx of these humanity driven science-fiction movies, this looked like more of the same based on the trailer. This even looks like 1997’s ‘Contact‘ in a number of key ways.

But what ‘Arrival‘ does well is send you on a compelling journey about how we communicate, which evolves into so much more. What’s crafted on screen is an artful piece that tugs at heart strings and blows minds.

Arrival

Trying to break down the many reasons why you should go see ‘Arrival‘ is hard so I decided to list the four best reasons why any viewer should venture to see it.

Honorable Mentions:

  • The Talented Direction
  • The Interesting Creature Design

4. The Powerful Amy Adams Performance

  • What Amy Adams brings to ‘Arrival‘ is the best performance from anyone in the film. Maybe it’s because she had the best material but she just eats this up. After ‘Batman v Superman‘, this movie, and the upcoming ‘Nocturnal Animals‘, Amy Adams has owned 2016.

3. The Stunning Cinematography:

  • It was too bad Denis Villeneuve couldn’t get cinematographer Roger Deakins to work on this film. But I’m now sorry I ever doubted what cinematographer Bradford Young could do. Every shot took my breath away. The camera was rarely static and Young wasn’t afraid to take risks with the visuals. Credit to the editor as well!

2. The Beautiful Score:

  • Coming fresh off an Oscar nomination for his work with Villeneuve in ‘Sicario‘, Jóhann Jóhannsson is going for it again with this score. The Icelandic composer has an amazing resume with unique scores but this one will stand out for sure. There’s a good chance this leads him to an Academy Award win because the atmosphere set with Jóhannsson’s sounds have never been better.

1. The Masterful Script:

  • Based on an award-winning short story from 1998 titled Story of Your Life, the script for ‘Arrival‘ is unbelievable. Everything is played out with the right tone and it perfectly handles all the complex moving parts. Writer Eric Heisserer is known for horror movies, even writing this year’s ‘Lights Out‘, but his screenplay shows another level of craftsmanship. His work brought the whole movie together.

Arrival’ opens November 11th. Starring: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest WhitakerMichael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma.

Synopsis: “A linguist (Amy Adams), recruited by the military, assists in translating alien communications when 12 U.F.O’s make first contact around the globe.”

Max Landis to Write, Direct ‘American Werewolf in London’ Remake Because… 2016

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In an amazing show of nepotism, Max Landis, the son of An American Werewolf in London director John Landis, is writing and directing a reboot of his father’s movie. Because this is 2016, and the night is dark and full of terrors.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the unfortunate news today. Max Landis, who first became a thing after Chronicle was a modest success, has since produced one terrible screenplay after another (anyone remember Mr. Right? Didn’t think so. It was his most recent movie and it grossed $34,694.) and built an online reputation as a garbage human, is now writing and directing a reboot of the film for which his father is most well known.

Time is a flat circle.

The re-booting of a classic is nothing that upsetting. Not anymore; these things happen all the time. But the son of the director, who hasn’t directed anything? Who is horrible to people on Twitter on a regular basis? Whose writing credits include Victor Frankenstein and American Ultra (don’t @ me about American Ultra) is getting his umpteenth opportunity to follow up one modest success with anything remotely watchable?

Anyway, there’s no release date for American Werewolf in London 2.0, so stay tuned. Or don’t, that might be a better plan. Let’s hope this is the worst news we get this week…

The Best Cheap Streaming Services

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Every day more and more streaming services spring up around the Inter-webs. Everyone knows the big players in the business like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. Those services offer massive libraries of TV and movies at a cost. More specialized services like Shudder chargers for the love of the horror genre. And if you love screams and guts galore then Shudder is an excellent place to go. But what about if you’re on a budget and still want more streaming entertainment? Never fear, the unsung heroes of streaming are here!

Crackle

crackle-streaming-movies
Sony’s Crackle is the quiet hero of streaming services. Completely free with minor ad breaks throughout movies and shows, Crackle is home to Jerry Seinfeld’s funny and cool Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. Crackle also produces original films, including two based on the Dead Rising video game series and The Runaways produced by Jeremy “Hawkeye” Renner. Unlike other services, there is no “premium” version of Crackle. It’s free with some ads and that’s it. And with the library available of classic and modern movies, that’s not a bad thing at all.

CruncyRoll

CrunchyRoll-streaming-animeThe home of all things anime. Crunchy Roll is free with minor ads and includes the most comprehensive library of streaming anime anywhere. Hulu and Netflix both do their part to cater to anime fans, but Crunchy is where the real otaku roll. Hits such as Naruto Shippuden, Dragon Ball Super, and One Piece are on Crunchy in their entirety. The service’s premium features offer simulcasting of shows from Japan. The point is, if you love anime, then Crunchy is for you. The free service is great, but if you REALLY love anime and all things Japanese, then the premium is worth every penny.

Spuul

spuul-streaming-bollywood-moviesWho doesn’t like a wacky Bollywood movie from time to time? Spuul specializes in bringing India’s filmmaking industry to the rest of the world with ease. It’s the only place to find such an extensive library of Bollywood films. Spuul offers the chance to download movies to mobile. The number of films depends on your account level. Free can download one video at a time while a premium account can have up to 1- movies for offline watching.

TubiTV

tubitv-streaming-movies
A rising star in the streaming world, TubiTV is free with minor ad breaks. The selection is a little all over the place, but a lot of gems are available, including some you’re paying for if you have Netflix like Freaks and Geeks. Tubi doesn’t have original content (yet) but does include a lot of choices when it comes to independent films of all genres. Tubi even features a few exotic kinds not found on major streaming services like Chinese TV, Grindhouse, and highly-rated Rotten Tomato movies.

REVIEW: ‘The Walking Dead’ S7 Episode 3 “The Cell” [SPOILERS]

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Walking Dead’s greatest weakness has always been the need to balance out its storylines. The show often has many irons in the fire, each of which requires attention. The premiere this season focused on the primary characters, and last week caught up up with Carol & Morgan. This week’s episode “The Cell” (no, not “The Well”) is technically about Daryl, who Negan has brought into the fold. However, the episode actually focuses on Dwight, the angsty Savior Daryl clashed with last season. Why The Walking Dead thought that was the protagonist we needed is unclear, but it appears there’s yet another character to worry about.

To the show’s credit, the lack of intrigue around Dwight isn’t for lack of trying. The Walking Dead provides insight into how Dwight came to be part of the Saviors, providing more insight into his life. Dwight’s wife saved his life by agreeing to marry Negan, following their failed escape last season. The majority of the episode is spent on making Dwight a sympathetic character, which makes a certain degree of sense. The show wants to make it clear that Negan is the primary evil, even though Dwight was a more visible villain last season. However, Dwight is set up as a new Merle Dixon, beating up Daryl in order to keep him safe. It’s the kind of character motivation that makes Dwight more interesting, and almost justifies spending a whole episode on him. But it feels like territory we’ve already tread, with a sympathetic antagonist that doesn’t hold the same weight.

The Walking Dead Daryl

Daryl’s role in this episode feels too much like he’s being protected. Not just by Negan, but by the writers as a whole. For a show that seems determined to take down lead characters, The Walking Dead shelters Daryl at every turn. Negan letting him live in the first place doesn’t make sense, since he took out the other threat in the main group (Abraham). So why let a man who’s potentially more dangerous keep his life, after trying to escape? Especially since Negan would have killed Dwight, who also attempted escape, if he hadn’t had a wife to give up? The show keeps trying to set up Daryl as the bad boy, who could flip on a dime & be a villain at any moment. We’ve seen various characters try to recruit Daryl into their gang of vagabonds. However, Daryl hasn’t had a distinguishable edge since Season 3, when he lost his brother. That’s when that type plot line became a dull point, and this is no exception.

The episode touches on several interesting ideas and points, but nothing is fully realized. Negan is still an ALMOST compelling villain, but still doesn’t have enough meat to him. The man Dwight tries to lead back to camp gives a far too impassioned speech to give into Dwight’s threats right away. The Who’s The Boss/“Easy Street” usage feels too messy to provide fully engaging juxtaposition with the gore of The Walking Dead. They’re all interesting elements that have potential, but the execution doesn’t feel earned at any point. There’s still too many balls in the air, and nothing lines up right just yet.

The Walking Dead has clear ideas that it’s working off of that could be immensely satisfying. Negan feels like a real threat to the world, and I want to see him in action. We’ve got loads of characters in the mix, but not enough who feel relevant. The Walking Dead needs to make its priorities clear, and begin working those plots that really matter.

Bret Easton Ellis Clarifies His Statement About Script For ‘The Batman’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The author Bret Easton Ellis recently sent house-bound fanboys into a tizzy by commenting during an interview with the ringer.com on the script for The Batman, to be directed by Ben Affleck. Ellis clarifies his speculation, according to his very own Facebook page.

TheBatmanEllis writes:

“During a long interview with The Ringer’s Sean Fennessey we talked about reasons why studio movies are so bad now and touched on the global needs of the marketplace. I told him something I had heard about the new Batman movie as an example of what might be the problem: I was talking with two executives who have NOTHING to do with the Batman movie and who KNEW people who were involved with the production. The two executives I was having dinner with were relating the problems they had heard about the script from people working on the Batman project–that’s all. I know no one involved with the Batman movie and I didn’t realize that my comments would make it into The Ringer piece or else I wouldn’t have cited that particular movie–I have no idea what the Batman script is like and I regret that it came off as if I was disparaging the project. Another reason to be careful giving interviews.”

While trouble with the script is possible, it hasn’t reached final draft status yet. And knowing the movies Affleck has either written (Gone Baby Gone) or directed (The Town, Argo, the upcoming Live By Night), it’s a safe bet the script will be fine.

Little is officially known about the plot of The Batman. What is certain is the film’s villain: Deathstroke. True Blood actor Joe Manganiello will play the mercenary/assassin, marking the characters first ever big screen appearance.

Joining Affleck and Manganiello are Jeremy Irons back as Alfred Pennyworth and (presumably) JK Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon. Affleck will direct from a script written by himself and Geoff Johns. The movie tentatively scheduled for a 2018 release.

Until then, Affleck plays the Dark Knight again in Justice League. Zack Snyder directs from a screenplay by Academy Award-winning writer Chris Terrio. Justice League hits theaters November 17, 2017.

Gal Godot Teases Possible Female Love Interest for ‘Wonder Woman 2’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The first movie isn’t even out, but Wonder Woman star Gal Godot teases an idea she has for the sequel, according to Batman-news.com, Godot is all in for her character to have a relationship with another woman.

Godot sat down for an interview with Israeli talk show Good Night with Guy Pines. Talk eventually turns to speculation about whether or not Wonder Woman will pursue a same-sex relationship. Godot didn’t shy away from responding about that and which actress she would like to lasso into the perspective role. The interview is in Hebrew, but the helpful folks at batman-news.com offer a translation:

“I saw her the other day, Halle Berry. She’s so beautiful. Wow! She’s gorgeous! So… yeah, I could do it with her.”

GalgodothalleberryWonder Woman’s sexual preference is a hot topic of late, ever since the announcement to Comicosity.com by Wonder Woman comic book writer Greg Rucka believing the character to be queer. Here part of Rucka’s quote:

“This is inherently the problem with Diana: we’ve had a long history of people — for a variety of reasons, including sometimes pure titillation, which I think is the worst reason — say, ‘Ooo. Look. It’s the Amazons. They’re gay!’

And when you start to think about giving the concept of Themyscira its due, the answer is, ‘How can they not all be in same sex relationships?’ Right? It makes no logical sense otherwise.

It’s supposed to be paradise. You’re supposed to be able to live happily. You’re supposed to be able — in a context where one can live happily, and part of what an individual needs for that happiness is to have a partner — to have a fulfilling, romantic and sexual relationship. And the only options are women.

But an Amazon doesn’t look at another Amazon and say, ‘You’re gay.’ They don’t. The concept doesn’t exist.”

Of course any speculation about a love interest for the sequel (if, indeed, there is one) is pure speculation at this point.

Gal Godot made her debut as the Amazonian warrior in 2016’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and reprises the role in the character’s first solo film, Wonder Woman.
Not much is known about the plot, but judging by the trailer, it’s an origin story that takes place during World War I.

Joining Godot are Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), and Connie Nielson (Queen Hippolyta).  Patty Jenkins directs from a screenplay written by Allen Heinberg and Geoff Johns.

Wonder Woman will hit theaters on June 2, 2017.

Here’s Your First ‘Ghost in The Shell’ Footage

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Ghost in The Shell movie is inching closer, and now we have a teaser of the trailer (yeah, a little silly) that shows off Scarlett Johansson in the title role.

This has a Matrix vibe to it for sure, and as the teaser of the trailer promises, we’ll get a full version on the 13th. Or, I guess, Tokyo gets it first, so if you’re there be ready:

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

Not a lot to go with there, but I am sure it’s plenty for Ghost in The Shell fans to either salivate over or scrutinize and point out flaws. Much has been made of the Johansson casting for the Major role, as it should be. But in the end, I suppose these movies are more about U.S. dollars than human decency.

Along with Johansson, Ghost in The Shell also stars Michael Pitt, Michael Wincott, Juliette Binoche, Rila Fukushima, and is directed by Rupert Sanders of Snow White and The Huntsman fame. So, there’s that.

It opens March 31.

Elodie Yung’s Elektra is Back For ‘The Defenders’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Thor: Ragnarok Jessica Jones Star Wars The Walking Dead

If you’ve watched the entirety of Daredevil season two you know that Elodie Yung’s character, Elektra Natchios, was killed at the hands of, no pun intended, The Hand. Now, however, the official Defenders Twitter has confirmed that the character will be back for the upcoming show.

Did anyone really think Elektra died? It was pretty obvious that the character would return, so this confirmation isn’t surprising.

Along with Yung, The Defenders stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Finn Jones as Danny Rand, Simone Messick as Misty Knight, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Scott Henwick as Stick, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing, Rachel Taylor as Trish Walker, and Sigourney Weaver as the unnamed villain.

“Marvel’s The Defenders” follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.”

The Defenders hits Netflix sometime in 2017.
