Marvel to Start New ‘Champions’ Series

And the honeymoon is officially over. Nova, Spider-Man (Miles Morales), and Ms. Marvel will leave the Avengers and form their own team, the Champions. The roster will include time displaced Cyclops, Hulk (Amadeus Cho), and Viv Vision.

The Champions series will be under the tenure of Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos.

No specific details are out regarding what will be the team’s first adventure. Though it appears to focus somewhat on the younger Cyclops wanting to join the team. But, as Mark Waid told Entertainment Weekly, the team will have an activist vibe.

One element Mark Waid points out in his interview is the introduction of many younger heroes into Marvel’s pantheon. With all this new blood, there is bound to be a change of how problems are handled.

Part of the buzz for the new series pertains to Marvel’s ability to use the title “Champions.” After a long standing battle with Heroic Publishing, Marvel could not use the title after the 1970’s. A recent settlement allows for the House of Ideas bring the team back into action.

The series appears to come directly from the aftermath of the ongoing Civil War II event. With Nova, Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel splitting away from the Avengers, it is obvious to see a profound split between the Old and New Guards.

It will be interesting to see how the team functions with the inclusion of Viv Vision and Amadeus Cho, especially since neither have experience in working in a team.

The series will come out in October, and will be available in print and online.
