After a hugely successful film debut it appears that Marvel Comics is focusing more on the Guardians franchise with the new series Guardians of Infinity being announced over the weekend.
The new series will feature a crossover of Guardians crews and its cast of characters. Guardians of the Galaxy characters such as Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon assembling alongside the Guardians 3000 and an introduction of the Guardians 1000.
Guardians 3000 features lesser known characters such as Starhawk and Vance Astro as well as Yondu, who appeared in the film. The new series, which brings together all aspects of the Guardians universe, should make for some of the most definitive storylines so far. The reasoning for the new installation could be in part to the success of the Rocket Raccoon film tie-in comic, which released in summer of 2014. Rocket Raccoon #1 sold an estimated 300,000 copies in July helping the comic book industry reach its highest sales ($53.6M) in the month of July.
Think about that. The best month in comic sales history (officially recorded beginning in 1997) wasn’t led by Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men or the Avengers. It was led by Rocket Raccoon. The first issue will release in December and the series is written by Dan Abnett with art by Carlo Barberi.
Each issue will feature a backup story featuring the biggest characters in the Marvel Universe. The first issue will reportedly see Rocket Raccoon teaming up with The Thing on an Earth like planet that revolves around pro wrestling.
Here’s the full description of the first issue:
Defending the galaxy is a good gig, but Drax isn’t thrilled with the combat hours (not enough of them) and Rocket isn’t thrilled with the compensation (not enough of it). They’re off on an adventure to supplement both, and Groot is happy to come along. But instead of the perks they want, they’re about to get more trouble than they can handle. Good thing the Guardians 3000 are on hand to help! But what about…THE GUARDIANS 1000??!!
Also in this issue, Latour and Cheung tell a one-off story of Ben Grimm and Rocket Raccoon, stuck on a planet where culture is based on Earth-style professional wrestling…but the stakes are life and death! THIS AIN’T KAYFABE, BROTHER!
