The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!
3. SUPERGIRL
“Nevertheless, She Persisted” (May 22)
As far as finales go, Supergirl‘s feels pretty paint-by-numbers. Having Supergirl take on Rhea in a duel is way too easy. The episode opened with a great Supergirl-Superman fight, which should’ve met the duel quota. The dream sequence with Mon-El also felt super cheesy, as did the ending music. The introduction of Evil Space Baby is an interesting cliffhanger to end on. But a lot of the episode was predictable and uninspired.
What worked was the way the show wrote off Mon-El. It would’ve been easy to have him die in Supergirl’s arms, along with his mother. Or to have him jump in the way of his mother’s weapon. Writing him off into the sunset is a great way to have Mon-El leave, but potentially return. Mon-El works in small doses, so to kill him would be a shame. Setting him to the side is a smart choice.
The CW also didn’t overuse its guest stars. Superman is only present as a one-off fight and utility player. Cat doesn’t give too many speeches to hamper the action. Martian Manhunter only shows up to… kiss Miss Martian? As a Young Justice fan, seeing that was weird. But Supergirl as a whole didn’t let any side plots lessen the excitement of the episode.
The episode isn’t a perfect closer, but it wraps up everything in a nice way. The CW puts Supergirl back in order for next season. There’s just enough mystery to entice viewers for next season. Supergirl has proven why it works for the network, despite existing in a separate world.
