Monkeys Fighting Robots

2017 was a fantastic year for comics. It seemed like every week New Comic Book Day had something awesome to offer. We had exciting big events, awesome new titles, talented and vocal creators and new and old characters being brought into the spotlight. In short, abundant and overwhelming.

It was also a busy year for me, so instead of taking the usual ‘Top 10’ approach, I am doing something different. What you have here are five things I LOVED about comics in 2017. I broke it up into six categories (it still HAS to be some kind of a list): Writer, Artist, Character, Title, Publisher, and New Title. Feel free to comment, agree, disagree, or what have you. Enjoy!

5Publisher: Archie Comics

Archie as a property got a lot of attention this year due to the success of Riverdale on the CW. But for me, it was the chances they took with their comics that caught my eye. The launch of The Archies ongoing by Alex Segura, Matt Rosenberg, and Joe Eisma was a treat for music fans. Archie Horror added the excellent Jughead: The Hunger to its line-up. And the continuing of new issues of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was a highlight as well. Not to mention the relaunch/refocus on their Dark Circle Line of superhero and crime comics that also deserve a look. Archie Comics is not only still relevant, in many ways they are forging a new path as well.
