New George Romero Zombie Movie Is Coming To Get You

George Romero Will Present ‘Road of the Dead’!

The king of zombie films is always crafting something new. George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead‘ will head to the Fantasia International Film Festival in July. George Romero will write the film with Matt Birman, who will also direct the project.

Frontières, the Fantasia International Film Festival’s annual film co-production market, announced the zombie film in their first wave of projects for the 9th edition. The genre film festival has played host to big premieres of ‘Red State‘, ‘Curse of Chucky‘, and ‘Final Destination 5‘. Many are expecting this project to be a huge headliner.

“They’re Coming To Get You, Barbara”

It’s a shame that George Romero isn’t returning to the director’s chair for this installment but maybe it’s for the best as his recent entries didn’t do well. The last film Romero directed for the long-running ‘Dead’ franchise is ‘Survival of the Dead‘, sitting at 30% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Keeping zombie movies alive is something important to George Romero so passing the torch to a younger director is smart.

Road of the Dead‘ was originally pitched about 10 years ago by director Matt Birman. The story is said to be set on an island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum for the entertainment of wealthy humans. Birman describes the project as ‘Road Warrior‘ meets ‘Rollerball‘ but it sounds more like ‘Death Race 2000‘. The two men have worked together in the past as Birman served as a second unit director for the last 3 Romero films. The future of the franchise is in very capable hands.

The Fantasia International Film Festival takes place from July 20th through July 23rd.
