You’re not wrong Mr. Weber. But I think these are part of some bigger systemic issues plaguing the publishing side. A few different sources give several reasons but some of them share the same thing. It’s that neither Marvel or DC put as much effort to get characters or storylines on the timeline out to the public.
I don’t just mean origin stories like Batman: Year One/Zero, Legend of Wonder Woman, or even the Spider-Man stories from the Ditko days in book stores or general retailers. I mean the best collections on a timeline; like no retailers had Eternals comics like the Neil Gaiman or Kieron Gillen runs which would’ve been perfect to capitalize on the movie. Also there are no adaptations that’re readily available until recently with Disney+ and HBOMax. All of this would make progression of character just a little easier but the mainstream publishers just aren’t trying.

The birth story in this issue leads me to think this is an entirely different universe that the one we’ve been seeing since the New 52. How can this be the same character that was born in Convergence and yet have an entirely different birth origin? Seems this has to be a different Jonathan Kent, and not the one born in Convergence and not the one we’ve seen these past few years. This must be elsewhere in the DC multiverse, don’t you think?

I’m hoping Hill’s Cain mellows out in the coming issues. It’s an interesting problem that this issue has: at some points the characters seem bigger and louder than they were in SANDMAN, but a lot of the rest of issue isn’t quite big or loud enough.

I think Hill is stepping into this world with the keen sense that he’s writing someone else’s characters. But so many of his characters are actually very similar. I’m expecting this issue to be a rough start to a really good series. This creative team is fantastic, they’re just being a little too careful right off the bat.

I’m glad I am not the only one who noticed Cain doesn’t sound right. He doesn’t talk like himself. He doesn’t match Sandman’s depiction or the old House of Mystery. If he matches any version of Cain it’s Caitlin R. Kiernan’s, and her version of The Dreaming everyone was out of character. I feel like Joe Hill has studied the late 90s and early 2000s spin-offs more than the actual Sandman. Why else use The Corinthian’s Sandman Presents Story which clearly can’t work if you’ve read Overture.

Auberon (Also known as Oberon) is the King of the Fae. You know, from Shakespeare’s a Midsimmer Night’s Dream and issue 19 of The Sandman. He also appears in Disney’s Gargoyles. Eldritch is technically correct because it just means weird and spooky but today most people reserve that word for Lovecraftian entities, not faerie folk.

Really enjoyed this. Any time a favorite creator comes out of a long hibernation I get wary of what this will be, but this feels like the mature book he’s been talking of making for quite some time now and I’m already hooked. I loved how he was able to insert the goofy, pun loving style of his older work into the fictional television show. There’s a lot of promise here and I really am excited to get to live in this world over the next couple months

Wholeheartedly agree. I’d love to read King work more in the Image compartment of DC wherein editorial direction is less prevalent. The guy understands pacing well and understands the emotional beats for narrative propulsion.

Honestly, anyone walking into the Batman scenario thinking the marriage was going to happen should probably refer back to The Death of Superman prior to the new millennium.

These properties are mostly in stasis.

In reply to Kata. I think it's true to form for King's run. There's been a throughline of Selina and Joker's friendship that popped up most effectively while they lay on a church floor. It's a little odd, a little uncomfortable, but it's aware of that, I'd say.

I didn’t mind that it wasn’t the original character but the comic was….so very bland. The characters were bland. The story was bland. Even the art and look of the werewolf was bland. Nothing was terrible but nothing grabbed me in the least.

Hey Matthew, glad you’re reading the Stan Lee biography! I really like your idea of “narrative trust” and its consequences.

In my own reading life, I’ve noticed that after a childhood and teen life of reading comic books, that I started viewing a great deal of writing as an engaged universe. For example, all of Jane Austen’s or John Updike’s work took on a shared universe perspective. Perhaps my Marvel reading led me to see Updike, for instance, as a Watcher kind of creator over a giant Updike universe.

I share the concerns about breaking the trust issues and how that can turn off readers and/or viewers.
