DC’s fixation on the dark and gritty expands with a trailer for its first series, Titans on the DC Universe SVOD service.

The trailer introduces us to Raven (Teagan Croft) as the focus trying to understand her powers as she talks to detective Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites). Far removed from the sarcastic deadpan character we’re used to seeing on Teen Titans, Raven appears to be in a role similar to Rogue in 2000’s X-Men as we start immersing ourselves in the world of the Titans.

As we get a glimpse of Grayson’s alter ego as Robin and future Nightwing and the other Titans of Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), Starfire (Anna Diop), and Dove (Minka Kelly) showing off their powers. We also see glimpses of the abilities to channel the darkness Raven has.

As a traditional origin story, it accomplishes what it needed, but going to the familiar palette of dark and gritty as DC Extended Universe as this live action TV show will do seems a little out of place. Perhaps I’m a bit spoiled by how much fun the heroes looked they were having on the animated series and became serious when needed, but the show judging solely on its trailer appears to be going only the monotone gritty serious look.

One of the most unforgettable moments to demonstrate how much it “targets” adults is Grayson’s relationship with Batman/Bruce Wayne, when he says “F*** Batman.” In the grand scheme of things, it just looks out of place and inserted just for shock value. Does that mean Grayson is a worn, beaten and bitter older man?

The CG for Beast Boy was respectable, Raven’s powers were a definite highlight, but Starfire needs improvement. What do you think of the live action Titans so far? Sound off in the comments below.
