Swamp Thing has appeared to found its female lead in Crystal Reed to play Abby Arcane for the DC Universe TV series.
DC TV fans may recognize Reed from Fox’s Gotham as Sofia Falcone, who took over her father’s criminal empire and became a foil for Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and became a thorn at Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) for control of the city.
Based on the DC comic created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, the project led by James Wan’s Atomic Monster is working with Warner Bros. Television for the DC Universe SVOD streaming service, according to Deadline.
Swamp Thing follows CDC Doctor Abigail Arcane as she investigates what appears to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana. As she ventures deeper, she discovers forces beyond her understanding at work exploring the dangerous and mysterious supernatural phenomena of the affected swamp.
While there have been seven incarnations of Swamp Thing, the series will focus on Alec Holland. With superhuman powers, control over plants and elasticity, he becomes the only force standing against the more dangerous elements of the swamp.
The most well-known live action incarnation of the character was played by the late Dick Durock. Durock appeared as the hero in the original 1982 Wes Craven film of the same name, subsequent sequels and TV series on the USA Network that ran from 1990 to 1993.
The show will be executive produced by Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear and Len Wiseman. Verheiden and Dauberman will handle writing duties with Wiseman directing.
