It was an okay and granted, there's a certain bias in reviewing the first issue in a much larger story (as I noted). It's like reviewing a novel based on the first 5 pages. Perhaps it's just me but I'm finding the reviews to be disproportionally high. I think this is due to what I will term as "dearth-of-sci-fi"; since there is so very little good/great sci-fi/fantasy comic material coming out these days, everyone has to love this because of the talent involved and look past the clunky shortcomings. Like I said though, when the full "chapter 1" arrives, it'll probably be a different story.

I enjoyed the book for what I felt it was . Aside from it marking BK Vaughn's return it was an interesting and fresh take on throwing you into a story and having you invest in characters. The baby as narrator is a great idea and the majority of the characters worked for me. I think the fact that he chose to refer to this as Chapter1 and not issue 1 should give you an indication that he plans on telling this story for a long time. Brian K Vaughn isn't one of my favorite writers but I stand by my review and believe that this was a solid first entry in the series and I'm excited to see the progression of our characters throughout.

I read the first issue of Saga and thought it was just "okay". I find that in comics, the fan favourites are constantly heralded as gods...it's weird. BKV is a good writer but this first issue left me a little flat. It's just the first issue, so some leeway is given, but 9/10? more like 6-7ish or thereabouts. Some of the dialogue was cliché and corny (so much so that I had to cringe) and the TV-headed cyborgs or whatever is a little: meh. Y: The Last Man was good but not great (certainly when compared to the majority of the finite long form work of Moore or Miller or even Preacher by Ennis). I feel like a lot of reviewers are gushing over this book because of all the hype and the return of - drumroll please - BKV! Who cares. It's a Sci-Fi fantasy mashup starring two alien hipsters. I'm sure it'll get better, but this first issue fell flat for me. maybe it'll be a different story once we have the full first arc. It is more apparent than ever that the monthly format is garbage for long narratives like this. I'd prefer the first story arc than having to follow this thing every month (barring any delays). A recent sci-fi book that is pretty great is Jeff Smith's 'Rasl', but that story would be better told in one graphic novel rather than in the piecemeal format of monthly books, but I digress...
