While I did grow up in the 90's, I've only just started reading comics in the past two years and I'm not the stereotypical "Duuuude this is Xtreeeem!" Liefeild loving 90's apologist. I've read a ton of Spider-man and Fantastic Four as well as all of Deadpool's stuff and most of it ranges from so-so to downright awful. Good only to see the origins of certain characters and major story arch's.

That being said the one character I've come away from reading these and truly loved was Carnage. Possibly because I'd never read any Batman and only have a basic idea of who the Joker was, but more-so because I think I saw the potential for this character to be amazing had Marvel fleshed him out more. This completely psychotic, sadistic killer who likes nothing more than murdering people in the most brutal way possible. I wanted to see how the Marvel universe would deal with the comic equivalent of Charles Manson. Absolutely fixated on nothing more than killing. Perhaps that's why he gets the hate he does. People see that as too boring a motivation. Maybe I'm just not your average comic fan, but a big part of what kept me away from comics for so long was, what seemed to me a redundancy in stories, every book was the same, bad guy wants to take over world, super powered hero's stop him. It was just far to boring for me but when I discovered Venom and the often accused of being boring Carnage that's when I found something that stuck out of the cookie cutter mold. I guess I just have a tendency to lean towards darker comics and characters.

It's amazing to see he's character being used the way it should have been. The church scene in this issue and the one panel in the last Carnage mini in which he's strung up a dog while fleeing Spider-man really work for me in making Cletus out to be one insane SOB. I'm loving Crains art, though as you pointed pointed out the backgrounds leave a lot to be desired. Here's hoping for many more, much darker Carnage stories ahead.
