I absolutely agree with your assertion that King Kong’s characters don’t need to be complex, because they don’t. They only need to perform their primary role which in Ann Darrow’s (or Dwan) case is to be the love interest of Carl Denham and Kong. For my money no one performed that role better than Jessica Lange.

The original KONG is a pure monster 1930’s film directed by Cooper and Schoesack at a lightning pace. They knew how to tell a story on film like so many of the old time directors did. Fay Wray was a silent film actress who brought with her to KONG a bigger than life characterization as well as unforgettable screams. She will always be Ann Darrow. KING KONG doesn’t need complex characters. It isn’t Hamlet.

Jackson’s version was an homage with good things in it, but it is mostly an ego trip with some massive miscasting and a terrible script with an awful and pointless subplot with Jimmy and the captain. Watching Watts do cartwheels in front of Kong just reminded me of Mighty Joe Young instead. Weak.
