Marvel’s The Defenders added a sci-fi icon in Sigourney Weaver as their primary antagonist in the series panel at New York Comic-Con.
While the show will premiere in 2017 joining the likes of Marvel’s Iron Fist and The Punisher, the show will focus on the team consisting of Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). Each hero has their respective TV series to build up to the show.
It will be interesting to see what develops for the show given the higher stakes and need for villains to fight. Will they come together fighting multiple villains at a time? Will they have a lot of turmoil caused by in-fighting a la The Avengers and Captain America: Civil War?
If Weaver has been cast as the main villain, who would she be? Keep in mind that the villain is not beyond being genderswapped.
Here are my guesses to who she can play:
Yandroth is the first villain of The Defenders in the comics. He was a frequent foe of Dr. Strange and can masterfully manipulate technology. With Dr. Strange coming next month and the Marvel Cinematic Universe embracing magic and mysticism from their introduction of Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Yandroth would make logical sense to start things off particularly as a dual threat. He could very well infuse his technology to be a thorn at the team’s side.
Mephisto’s powers resemble that of the Devil with superhuman strength, shapeshifting and a master manipulator. As one to pull the strings behind the scenes, this would definitely be an ideal and perhaps likely role for Weaver, who I think can pull it off unassuming and nonchalantly.
As one who pulls the strings behind the scenes, I wouldn’t put it past the writers to have Mephisto constantly test the limits of The Defenders in similar vein of how Loki manipulated the Avengers in their first feature.
Who do you think Weaver plays? Who would you want the Defenders to face?
