Since 2015, Marvel and Netflix have been working together to put out some of their best original series. Starting with the otherworldly Daredevil and more recently, the dark and brooding Jessica Jones, the popularity has egged on more than one spin-off. Now, it seems that Netflix is building these shows up to come full circle. With Daredevil just finishing season 2 and the Jessica Jones second season in development, multiple announcements have been made about more series to come.
Luke Cage’s spin-off from Jessica Jones is preparing for release. It’s announced to arrive onto Netflix as of September 30th. This series will contain 13 episodes and will follow Luke Cage through his origin story.
From there we are supposed to be expecting an Iron Fist series. The reason this is not a spin-off is because the synopsis given is after Iron Fist’s origin. Danny Rand returns to New York City after having been missing for years. The series will get 13 episodes and is currently being filmed. If you are unfamiliar with Iron Fist, he is a young man given the abilities of the Iron Fist through a mystical city named K’un L’un. In the comics, at the age of 19, he returns to New York City to avenge his father’s death, which will hopefully be addressed in this upcoming series.
So, what do you do when you’ve got Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist all on board? Apparently, a Defenders mini series. This series will only contain 4 to 8 episodes and for those familiar with the comics, will be rather different. Although most of the characters named were also in The Defenders comics, Netflix is sure to have a different spin on it. There is no definite synopsis yet and as of right now is only in pre-production.
It doesn’t stop there. Announced today is a Daredevil spin-off The Punisher. Due to popularity and an uncanny performance we get a 13 episode season 1 of Frank Castle’s return to screen. Although no synopsis has been given for this series either, we can all agree that they will do a fantastic job as they have for the other shows. It’s unsure if The Punisher will join The Defenders series, but getting a show all for himself is exciting.
Of course, these shows wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful actors, actresses and writers. Each series has had a dark undertone and has focused on the truly dramatic aspects of each character. This is what continually draws us in and we can’t wait for more to come. Who else is stoked for the upcoming Luke Cage release? If you haven’t seen it’s teaser trailer, watch below!
