Wow a insightfull review from someone whho's watched 2 episodes at most. Congratulations, you've jumped the gun.
This show is so much more than visuals, and probably has the most complex storyline among tv shows today, no wonder only half of the initial viewers were able to make it this far. It's a future classic this one.

As someone whose life has been molded by mental illness, I am quite a fan of this show's take on the subject. I'm not familiar with the source material and I don't see why it matters if the creators chose to not go with the fictional characters autism, in this show he is believed to be a paranoid schizophrenic. The rest of the season has him tackling and addressing what it's like to feel like an other because of your perceived or actual mental health problem. The other part I like is that David feels like any one of my friends from my time in the institute. More importantly than that is showing the toll it takes on someone's concept of self, when you've been sick for most of your life, people trying to downplay how much it incapitates you hurts. As the season goes on, the show incorporates a mental-parasite as the villain and cause of David's issues. Exploring his problems in this supernatural way serves as a nice metaphor to explain to people what it's like to feel sick. My illness isn't a strength, it's a disease that feeds on me, the show runners and actor seem to get how a lot of us feel. From a fantasy perspective, it's a lovely escapist idea that helps me and my friends cope with the pain, seeing someone who can go through the transition that most of us will not be lucky enough to follow.

Overall, maybe your right that it doesn't portray mental health issues in the most positive way, but goddamn did they do a wonderful job tapping into the emotion of people like us. I can't speak for everyone, but I want people to have empathy for us, not sugar coated sympathy.

As someone who has been through both mental health problems and sexual assault and abusive relationships, about which I have publicly written on other websites, I am one of those voices. I'm sorry that you disagreed with my opinion, but that's what opinions are for - disagreement.

Academic research, however, supports the impact of television on things like rape culture. If you'd like to read more, here is a collection of resources: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1557085115576386
