Lauren Cohan, one of the major pillars of The Walking Dead, is confirmed to be returning for next season for the popular AMC drama.
A series regular since season 2, Cohan played farmer’s daughter Maggie Greene and thrusted into a leadership role in more recent seasons eventually running the Hilltop Colony in seasons 7 and 8. Cohan revealed the news of her return to the show at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Tuesday night during a panel for her latest film, Mile 22 when a fan asked her about her status, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“I’m going back. There’s a lot more Maggie story to tell.”
The only thing Cohan can reveal was her role in the upcoming season is going to be “good.”
Stars Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus were confirmed to be reprising their roles as Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon, respectively, for season nine before Cohan signed. She was a previous holdout to negotiate for a better deal. Costar Khary Payton, who plays Ezekiel, posted on his Instagram with the caption, “Pay the woman.”
Speculation on her The Walking Dead future was cast further in doubt when she joined the ABC pilot Whiskey Cavalier, playing Francesca “Frankie” Trowbridge, a CIA operative who must work with FBI agent Will Chase (Scott Foley), whose codename is Whiskey Cavalier. Whether or not the show gets picked up is uncertain, but the news comes with a sigh of relief with season nine of The Walking Dead starting to film next week.
The extent of her involvement with The Walking Dead may depend if Whiskey Cavalier gets picked up for additional episodes. The season eight finale of The Walking Dead concluded with Maggie’s major rift with Rick’s decision to spare Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) life at the conclusion of “All Out War”.
Negan famously made an example of her husband, Glenn, making her a widow. She vowed to prove to Rick and Michonne how wrong their decision is.
One thing’s for certain, nobody will have any idea how this plays out, because of the deviations the show has made from the comics.
How do you think Maggie’s role is going to play out for season nine?
