What about Jack's portrayal of writer Eugene O'Neill in Reds (1981)? You could argue that role was probably one of his most understated, subtle performances of his career. Plus, he did get a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for the film.

I think The Shining belongs at #1. One Flew over the cukoos nest #2 Batman #3. His portrayal of Jack Torrance was incredible. All the emotions and level of crazy he descended through in that film was a feat that can be accomplished by no other. Between him and Shelley Duvall that was one of the best and rarest moments of true acting that I've ever seen. Obviously it was so good, its affected Duvall later in life. Just watching the behinds scenes where they were getting for those big parts, you saw them reach deep inside themselves to provide us with the most iconic scenes ever. Incredible how upon its release it was panned by critics and negative reviews were given on their performance, absolute ridiculousness. One flew over a cukoos the nest, excellent job, excellent film just as every bit as good as his work was in the shining but his character didn't have as much depth to me as Jack Torrance did, he went through many levels of Jack torrance and the man was completely terrifying in that role. He was my favorite Joker, after the original of course. My favorite quote " Ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight" the whole speech he made featuring that quote was pretty intense. I was a teen back then whatcha expect but yeah. That's the order I think they should be in.
