I think studio interference is definitely a huge contributing factor for the reasons the films have been poorly received, but not the only factor. “Batman v. Superman” and “Suicide Squad” both have vastly superior Director’s Cuts – most people agree they’re a lot better than the theatrically released versions. However, they’re not so different that they swayed the majority of peoples’ minds as to whether or not they enjoyed the film.

I think it’s impossible for the WB to stop worrying about how much films make at the Box Office though. If they don’t make the returns, they can’t keep investing in these movies. It’s the same for every studio – it’s why Box Office numbers matter. In the end, critics don’t matter as long as the audience loves the movies, but the majority of the reaction for the DCEU from general audiences so far has been unenthusiastic at best. Unless the WB can turn things around, it’s going to start reflecting in the Box Office returns.

I agree that DC has heavier, darker, and more complicated characters overall, and a much more epic nature about their stories – they are, after all, Gods among men. But I disagree that lightness and hope can’t be imbued into these movies. The comics have an abundance of it. The only character who should be consistently dark is Batman; and even he, in certain comics, can have moments of levity. (Especially in his interactions with Robin and Alfred.) But as for the other heroes, The Flash and Green Lantern are both characters that fall in the lighter end of the spectrum. Even Superman, though often serious, has an innate sense of optimism and hope that allows him to be a beacon of light amongst all of the other superheroes. Just because a comic book or a film goes lighter or includes humor, doesn’t mean they can’t still have dark moments or a serious story arc. The comics that the DC characters spring from demonstrate that all of the time. “Light” and “Fun” aren’t bad words in my opinion!

I meant in the way they handle Captain America’s optimism, patriotism, innocence, and sense of good. I think that’s exactly how Superman should be portrayed on the big screen. Personality wise, the two characters are very similar, even if their power sets are vastly different.

I think the fact that James Wan and Matthew Reeves signed on to do Aquaman and The Batman respectively definitely means that the WB is going to have to stop meddling in the editing of their films. They’re popular filmmakers with vision, they won’t put up with the meddling.

Same here. There might be some tonal changes, very subtle ones or they might take notice of the better receive director’s cuts of the films and decrease their level of interference in the films. It seems directors are pretty much demanding WB stop interfering in the editing of their films and having that in their contracts.

Except Captain America isn’t a over powered super being pretty much able to kill anything and everyone that get in his way, if he wanted to. Superman problem has always been that he way to powerful and have a pretty boring story.

One way to solve that would be to have leave the DCEU altogether

WB need to stop worry about how much films make at the box office, stop trying to think you can suddenly start earning more money than marvel. Just make great films, stuff the critics.

The thing WB can do is just release to cinema the films made by their directors and stop trying to cut and slice them. If they want to they can always release a WB board edited version for DVD/BLU Ray market.

Haven’t watch the director’s cut of SS yet but I hear that is better than the cinema version.

The “Martha” moment in Batman v. Superman was definitely the biggest flaw in the movie in my eyes. Though I will give them some credit, because in all of my years of reading comic books and watching the films and television shows, I never made the connection that Bruce Wayne’s and Clark Kent’s mothers shared the same name. Probably because it’s irrelevant.

As for Superman, I agree completely. If Warner Bros. wants the perfect blueprint for how to handle the character, they just need to look at how Marvel is handling Captain America.

This is the least reassuring statement WB could make…except for “Trust us. The Aquaman trilogy is going to shift this entire universe in a different, better direction.”

As for Dawn of Justice, while there are many flaws, for me it was the crucial moment ending the fight between Batman and Superman – that their mommies have the same name.

Also Superman, who is a problem to be solved rather than a compelling character.

I’d be surprised if they’re not debating that course of action behind the scenes at the very least.

It would definitely be interesting and successful! As much as I love the Batman mythos, and think he could sustain his own extended universe, I’m hoping they don’t give up on the other DC Characters if “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League” underperform.

Nolan’s Batman in the DCEU would have been really interesting! I wonder if there’s any credence to them throwing money at Nolan and Bale to continue only to get turned down. As awesome as it would have been, I’m kind of glad The Dark Knight Trilogy is its own, perfect story.
