Scott Derrickson, who loved the Sorcerer Supreme character so much, confirmed plans for a Doctor Strange 2. He’s quite familiar with the comics and considers the first flick “the tip of the ice berg”, according to Den of Geek.
“I love the character, I love the visual possibilities, and I know the comics so well – [the first movie is] the tip of an iceberg. There’s so much progress that can be made.”
Derrickson cited Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy when explaining a focus on villains the second time around. He described the introduction of The Joker and Two-Face as a “visceral experience” and would like to do it for a Doctor Strange sequel.
“What made The Dark Knight so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep. And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I’d love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange.”
The Sorcerer Supreme actor Benedict Cumberbatch did mention there was “more than one” [Doctor Strange solo movie]” on his contract, but otherwise he remained silent.
After top neurosurgeon Stephen Strange is injured in a car accident that ruins his career, he sets out on a journey of healing, where he encounters the Ancient One, who becomes Strange’s mentor in the mystic arts.
The movie stars Cumberbatch as Strange, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rogue One’s Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, and a host of many.
If Doctor Strange 2 is villain-focused, which villains do you think could be representing the sequel?
Doctor Strange will debut on Nov. 4.
