Lets be real,in majority of mangas/animes side characters are far more interesting than the main characters and AOT is no exception,i'd say its the side characters who shape up the story. Its actually the lack of Eren&co that made this season much more enjoyable for me than the first one and if you read the manga then you will know that one of those "side characters" will give Eren a run for his money when it comes to being an interesting and complex protagonist. But you are kinda right that Eren seemed like an unnecessary character this season, i'd prefer to see him acting rationally than acting like an angry german boy 24/7 who swears to kill everyone and everything, basically what we saw the whole first season. And same goes to Mikasa, those few moments of her yelling "EREN" were just enough for me, no need to give us more. The world doesnt revolve around Eren,Mikasa & Armin and i thought that was pretty obvious when Bertolt & Reiner were revealed to come from the outside world, so if you are one of those people who think its the "protagonists" and rest then you are in for big disappointment. The complexity of Reiner,Bertolt and Ymir really made this season for me and Erwin was also damn amazing, though the bucket that went into Mikasa & Armin eating crackers could've been spent on more important details.
