With ABC turning down Marvel’s Most Wanted and cancelling Agent Carter, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is Marvel’s only live-action representation on TV outside of Netflix. Here are some suggestions to bolster Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. entering season 4; and there will be spoilers.
Loosen the Chains Between Marvel Cinematic Universe and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
There’s something to be said about how disconnected the Marvel Cinematic Universe is to the TV counterpart in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with virtually almost no presence whatsoever in the films. The effects from the films have almost become inconsequential save for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The registration of Inhumans has been an ongoing since season 2 so Captain America: Civil War didn’t really factor in.
There’s also been much-publicized complaint from star Chloe Bennet, who plays Daisy/Quake about the lack of support from Marvel Studios to use their resources to assist the show. Anything helps at this point.
Bring in Hulk
It’s sad star Mark Ruffalo still hasn’t had any standalone projects as the Hulk/Bruce Banner. While Marvel is keeping their film stars in films, it’s tragically wasted that important characters like the Hulk are seen as nothing more than support characters. He was featured in both Avengers films and will have a “significant” presence in Thor: Ragnarok, yet through 3 phases, the ONLY Hulk film in the MCU starred Edward Norton. The only other remnant from that film for continuity sake who’s made one more appearance is Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt) in Civil War.
So you’re telling me, Marvel, either you can’t broker a deal with Universal or are you telling us the Hulk doesn’t deserve his own film and you just remembered to use Ross conveniently just for Civil War? What about Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) or Betty Ross (Liv Tyler)? Hell, wouldn’t it be quite the surprise if Ross was selected as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
I don’t buy that introducing the film character will take away from the featured cast bunk. Bruce can be a valuable asset as a special guest star to help Fitz (Ian De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) on any scientific issue. Also he would bring one hell of a climactic moment as the Hulk and it wouldn’t overwhelm whatsoever. Bringing in Hulk would be a definite ratings grab.
Use More Auxiliary MCU Characters
Speaking of ratings grab, there were only three MCU film characters who’ve made appearance on Agents with Sif (Jaimie Alexander), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). I like to see Maria Hill take up duties as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. since Smulders had a successful run on How I Met Your Mother. I imagine she’s likely happy doing films, but she would be my least surprising pick at the position.
Personally, I like to see more auxiliary characters make appearances. I mentioned Sterns since I think he would make a great villain as Leader given his fate not being followed up on since The Incredible Hulk as his head was mutating from Banner’s blood.
Other candidates I like to throw in the running, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) would be a good choice for the Thor: Ragnarok episode since she has zero presence in the film, but I tally it to a highly unlikely. I would also throw in Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) as another mind who can be tapped. Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Norman Osborn, Kingpin (Vincent D’Onfrio) are all characters the show can provide additional depth.
Bring Back Bobbi and Hunter
While the episode was filmed ahead of the planned Most Wanted, we now know unless Netflix or Freeform decides to pick up on the show, it’s DOA. So have a side plot with Hunter (Nick Blood) and Bobbi/Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) to get them back into the fold. Perhaps they can join the Advanced Threat Containment Unit (ATCU) in secret despite being disavowed on a story arc next season.
Introduce More Villains Beyond HYDRA
I mentioned Norman Osborn and Kingpin as possibilities. I like to open the field more for possible villains from the MCU.
I would like to throw in Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) as a major villain possibility for season 4 since he’s kind of one of few villains left alive in an MCU film. I felt his character to be underwhelming in Civil War since all he did was set the Avengers against each other…no megalomaniacal plot whatsoever.
What MCU characters do you hope to see introduced or expanded on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
